Pork Belly Update #7-The Latest on Ragbrai

April 1, 2021
Dear Porkers,
The daffodils are up, Easter's around the corner, and the phone is ringing like it's 2019! RAGBRAI veterans and virgins alike have the last full week of July on their minds and on their calendars. If absence makes the heart grow fonder, then last year's loss is this year's anticipation-on-steroids. Come July, it's going to be a special one.
(ABOVE RIGHT: That's a little goat on Mark's back, RAGBRAI 2019.)
We at Pork Belly Ventures are in touch with all eight overnight towns, planning evening menus with our caterers, arranging shower locations, and lining up morning and afternoon food vendors in Pork Camp. We've talked with our massage team leader, and we'll let you know when you can start making appointments. Our helpful bike mechanics will be back in camp, along with a full-service bike shop. Stand by for more news about the PBV Experience on RAGBRAI 2021, and scroll for the most recent news.
We have some announcements here about when to expect more on bike-shipping and what we know so far on Clinton Long-Term Parking. Plus, on a limited basis, we can offer dorm rooms a block from camp on Tuesday night in Iowa Falls!

Two Extra Weeks
to Register with RAGBRAI!
Not surprisingly, but for the first time in our memory, RAGBRAI has extended the registration deadline. If April 1 snuck up on you or if you've been on the fence, you now have until April 15th to register online at RAGBRAI.com.
By the way...
Just today on FB, the RAGBRAI ride director announced that RAGBRAI crested the 10K weeklong rider mark. We congratulate Dieter, Anne, and their hard-working team! It's officially a come-back!

Pork Belly Ventures Availability
It's early, friends, and we are far from full! We welcome you to sign up for our Weeklong Support, including your morning coffee, your PBV shirt, your daily, hot and private shower with towel, secure phone-charging, three hearty suppers (and three other optional evening meals), and live music on stage every night! Our big, happy, capable crew will be in camp to help you every day. Optional goodies like our midweek laundry service and our massage therapists are available only to registered Porkers. There's a lot more detail about our support in our our invitation letter and at the website! By all means, please join us for RAGBRAI.
All of our shuttles are available as well.
The only service that will sell out soon is our rental tent service, but as most people will tell you, PBV is best known for the comprehensive support we offer. You can still bring your own tent and sign up for our support!

PBV Rental Tents
for RAGBRAI 2021
For the first time, we expect to sell out the tent service in early April. Once this update goes out, this popular service is likely to sell out fast. If you want a rental tent, please grab one.
Unpaid Tents Will Be Cancelled.
If you've paid the 10% deposit on your tent service, your reservation is secure. Needless to say, if you selected the tent service on your application, and if you have made no payment, then naturally you don't have a reservation. This is a point in the season when we do some clean-out, so that we're looking at real numbers. We'll be taking unpaid tents off of applications soon. If you need help with login to make payment, write to Tammy@pkbelly.com. Do it right away.
Deadline Extension for Those Who
Let It Ride from 2020:
PBV Will Make 100% Refunds
Only Until April 7.
As we have said before, Pork Belly Ventures might not be around today, if it weren't for those of you who "let it ride," leaving your deposits and full payments on account with us from 2020 when RAGBRAI was cancelled, straight through to this year. During those lean months, you helped us pay the bills, keep up the insurance premiums, and most importantly, keep our valued crew with us all year long.
Last year, we said that for those who signed up back in 2020 but had to cancel in 2021, we would make 100% refunds until March 15th. Of course, we're past that date. We've waited, thinking some folks might need a little more time to decide. It's our custom to remind you of deadlines. The extended deadline for those who signed up in 2020, but wish to cancel, is April 7th. After April 7, friends, we must go back to our published Cancellation Policy, which you can read right here:
To be clear, if you signed up with us in 2021 for RAGBRAI services, our normal cancellation policy applies.
What About Letting It Ride Until 2022?
We appreciate those of you who have needed to cancel and hoped to leave your payments on account until next year. However, we need to start straightening out the books and defining our fiscal years again. So if you have to cancel this year, no worries. Write to us, please, with an address where we can mail your refund check. Next year, when you receive our RAGBRAI Invitation Letter, you can login and join us! You're welcome in Pork Camp any July!
Dorm Rooms A Block from Camp
in Iowa Falls!
Here's something we've been working on since last year--dorm rooms just a block from camp in Iowa Falls on the Tuesday night of RAGBRAI.
The dorm is actually made up of two-bedroom, two-bathroom, air-conditioned apartments. Each bedroom has two slightly elevated built-in beds, kind of like this photo. Each bedroom has a private bath. A living room/kitchenette separates the two bedrooms.
Pork Belly Ventures has the whole building--it's half full already of Porkers who inquired early. Please note that we are not assigning roommates who don't already know each other.
Whether you take one bed in a room or two beds in a room, the price of the room is $110. Two can share a room with a private bath for $55 per person. One person can pay for both beds ($110) and have a private room. The college will receive $50 for each bed as a student fundraiser. Pork Belly Ventures will assist with moving bags from camp (one block), provide towels for your use inside the dorm, and we'll have crew on site in the afternoon to help you move bags in. Unlike a hotel stay, you'll provide your shampoo and soap, you'll roll out your camping bedroll on the mattress, and you'll provide your own pillow.
If you have a group of more than four, we can offer the floor space in the living room for $25 per person--again, part of the college fundraiser. That way, groups can have an apartment to themselves.
Please agree to these terms before you reach out to reserve your room. No alcohol in the dorm. In fact, the appropriate beverage in the dorms is a water bottle with a lid. Be quiet after 10:00 p.m. and before 6:00 a.m., so that your dorm neighbors can get a full night's sleep. We had to make some promises about how we will treat these apartments, so please keep our word. Don't leave anything behind... our crew will take your trash as you exit the building in the morning. Be considerate of the facility. And thank you for supporting this student fundraiser!
To reserve a space, we need the names of all PBV registered riders who will use the space.
If you agree to our terms, then please email Tammy at tammy@pkbelly.com to reserve your rooms. We'll take requests in the order they are received, and we'll get back to you with a confirmation email. (I'm working alone at this point in the year, so please allow time for me to respond--probably in the evening! Thanks!)
The reservation will be put on your PBV RAGBRAI application. We'll send you a confirmation email, showing that we've added this special service for you. It is subject to the cancellation policy of PBV.
As usual, when we sell out the rooms, we'll take a reasonable number of names on our waiting list, in case of cancellations.
At some point, we'll let you know about any other opportunities for hotel stays and/or indoor sleeping opportunities during our week in the corn.
Hang On for Info on
Clinton Long-Term Parking
Anyone who has signed up for our East/West Shuttle from Clinton to LeMars prior to RAGBRAI is probably wondering about the plan for long-term parking in Clinton. Here's what we can tell you...
  • PBV has reserved an excellent staging area in Clinton.
  • We will use the same staging area before and after the ride.
  • Clinton's long-term parking areas are separate from our staging area (and from any charter staging areas). We will give you complete instructions/suggestions about dropping things at our staging area, parking your vehicle, and shuttling back to us.
  • We will provide a map of the town, showing you where to park and where we'll stage.
  • Like 2019, we're planing for riders using the PBV East/West Shuttle to sign up for Clinton Long-term parking at the PBV website. We're working on this with Clinton now.
  • We're also working on a Friday night indoor sleeping option adjacent to our staging area.
  • We hope to offer you food/breakfast options as well. Food vending will be a fundraiser for our local hosts.
  • Please stay tuned for more from us as soon as we can announce it!
Oh! And there's no need to email us with your departure preferences for the East/West Shuttle. In June, you'll be able to choose either Friday at 1:00 or 3:00 or Saturday at 7:00, 8:00, or 9:00 a.m.
Hang On for Bike Shipping
In the Spring, we always wait for Fedex or UPS pricing before we can get the Sendmybike.com website updated and ready to accept orders for RAGBRAI bike shipping. We'll send an update when it's all ready for you, hopefully in April!
You don't have to spend the week with Pork Belly Ventures in order to use our bike-shipping service. Whether or not you're with PBV all week, we'll have convenient locations in LeMars for claiming your bike and in Clinton for handing off your bike for return shipping!
